FREE Training in Transportation Careers Program

2014 Transportation Careers Training Program
Applications accepted now through May 16, 2014
Training starts June 2, 2014 at York Tech Community College

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) (South Carolina Division Office) are pleased to announce the 2014 Transportation Careers Training Program (TCTP) will be managed by Construction Solutions Team, Inc. The program will allow up to thirty-five participants to receive the National Center for Construction Education and Research certification as well as other credentials.

Pre-employment Training will include OSHA 10 Hour Construction Standards, SCDOT Flagger Certification, Construction Math, Blue Print Reading, Site Layout, Job Readiness Skills, Basic Life Skills, Construction Basics, and more.

After successfully completing Pre-employment Training, fifteen participants will transition into Heavy Equipment Operator Training and fifteen participants will transition into Commercial Driver’s License Training.

All training costs will be covered by the SCDOT/FHWA program.


Applications will be accepted from individuals residing in the following seven counties:


• Cherokee
• Chester
• Chesterfield
• Fairfield
• Lancaster
• Union
• York

Individuals must meet the following criteria:

• Unemployed, underemployed, minorities, women, and/or economically disadvantaged;
• A high school graduate or have obtained GED;
• Pass a pre-course drug test and submit to random screening;
• Have reliable transportation to and from the training site;
• Be physically able to withstand the rigors of the construction industry (this includes inclement weather, traffic, night work and heavy lifting); and
• Willing to travel at the conclusion of the program if hired by a highway construction contractor.

Upcoming Small Business Workshops


It's 2011 and the perfect time to put your dreams of a business of your own into action ..... and we have some great opportunities for you to get started .... and for expanding or diversifying existing businesses as well!


First, you may remember that we had to cancel a workshop a couple of weeks ago due to the untimely arrival of a real honest-to-goodness snowstorm. We have now rescheduled that "How to Start a Small Business" workshop for Monday, Jan. 31st, 6-8 pm in Room 210 of the Thurmond Building.


If you think you'd be interested in having a franchise business, Doug Stout, a Franchising and Self-Employment Coach with Entrepreneur's Source in Greenville, SC will conduct a workshop on Franchising on Tuesday, Feb. 7th, 6-8 pm in Room 210 of the Thurmond Building.

IRS Tax Workshop for Small Businesses



Whether you are planning a business or already in business, plan now to attend our October 18th IRS Tax Workshop to make sure you’re doing all the right things for your small business!

The Winthrop Regional Small Business Development Center in Rock Hill, SC is offering a FREE tax workshop for prospective and new small business owners. The workshop will be held from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on October 18, 2010, in Room 415 of the Thurmond Building (College of Business) on the campus of Winthrop University.

The Small Business IRS Tax Workshop contains general information about different types of business organizations, record keeping requirements and business tax returns. This workshop is one of two taxpayer education programs sponsored by the Winthrop Small Business Development Center each year, along with a CPA and representatives of the SC Employment Security and the SC Department of Revenue. It is directed toward the small businessperson who is starting a business or has recently started a small business in the service, retail or manufacturing area. Existing businesses are also welcome.

The morning session will cover federal tax requirements for small businesses and the afternoon session will cover state tax and employment security obligations. A packet of helpful reference publications is given to each participant.

Two Upcoming Workshops



Still puzzled trying to piece together your thoughts, ideas, plans, and requirements for your new or soon-to-be business? The Winthrop Regional Small Business Development Center in Rock Hill, SC is offering two workshops in the month ahead that may be of help.

Upcoming on October 19th is an all-day seminar that will be helpful no matter how far along you are in your business plans, and especially helpful if you've already opened the door on your new business: The FREE IRS Tax Workshop will be providing important tax information for new entrepreneurs as well as existing business owners. Speakers will include a CPA and representatives of the SC Employment Security and the SC Department of Revenue. The seminar will be held in the Thurmond Building (College of Business) at Winthrop University, Monday October 19th in Room 415 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you're in business, you shouldn't miss this ..... it's relevant for every business owner.

And if you are quite sure what kind of business you want to go into, but you're pretty sure that you don't want to start from the ground up on your own, you might be interested in looking at a franchise business as the way to go. "Why Franchising Is A Viable Option In Today’s Economy," a 2-hour workshop, will be held Monday, November 9th in Room 212 of the Thurmond Building (College of Business) at Winthrop University, 6-8 p.m. This free workshop will be facilitated by Doug Stout of The Entrepreneur's Source. Mr. Stout works with individuals who are looking for options that may include purchasing and running a franchise, "typically those who are

1) Interested in new challenges

2) Frustrated with their current job or career path

3) Unemployed due to downsizing, right sizing, or capsizing

4) Considering a career transition

5) Wanting to develop an alternative source of income

6) Interested in doing something they love

7) Looking to pursue their dream of self-employment
